Celebrating the life
of your loved one

A thoughtfully crafted, personal funeral ceremony — religious, semi-religious, or non-religious — created with care to reflect a unique life.

About Michael

A compassionate guide through a very difficult time

Saying goodbye to someone we love is one of the hardest things any of us will ever do. As an independent funeral celebrant and minister, my role is to take some of the weight off your shoulders — to listen, to plan, and to lead a ceremony that honours your loved one in a way that feels true to who they were.

I provide a full and varied range of alternative funeral ceremonies, tailored to the needs of the family. Whether you would like a service that is religious, non-religious, or somewhere in between, the ceremony can contain as much of, or as little religious content as you wish.

I am based in Toddington, Central Bedfordshire, and travel throughout the surrounding counties. I am an accredited member of the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC).

The Ceremonies

Three approaches, one shared purpose

Every ceremony begins with listening. The form it takes is for the family to choose.

I.

A Funeral ServiceCreated and presented by the family

This is where the family would prefer to create and present their own ceremony. I would act in more of a consultative role, assisting the family and providing important links between the various elements of the ceremony.

II.

Non-ReligiousBased on human values

Focusing on how precious life is, with no mention of any religious beliefs. The content may include:

  • Opening music
  • Welcoming words
  • Thoughts on life and death
  • Spoken tributes & poetry readings
  • The eulogy
  • Music for quiet reflection
  • Final farewell
III.

Semi-ReligiousA meaningful blend

Acknowledging that the family may gain comfort from including some of these elements (all of which are optional):

  • Opening music
  • Spoken tributes
  • Welcoming words
  • Chosen hymn
  • The eulogy
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • New Testament reading
  • The committal & blessing
What to expect

A gentle, considered process

Every step is taken at the family's pace, with care and discretion at the heart of everything.

i

Initial Contact

Usually via your chosen Funeral Director, who will pass on your wishes and put us in touch.

ii

Home Visit

I'll visit you at your home or another address of your choice to discuss your loved one — their life, working life, family, friendships, interests and achievements.

iii

Drafting & Approval

I'll write the eulogy or tribute and send it for you to read in advance, with the order of service, so everything is exactly right.

iv

The Ceremony

On the day, I'll await your arrival at the chosen venue, lead the ceremony and be on hand throughout. A transcript is then presented to the family.

Locations & Music

Where, and to what music

A venue that suits the family

Although most ceremonies take place at a Crematorium Chapel, Woodland Burial site or Private Chapel, other locations may be used as long as permission has been given by the owners of the building.

Funerals and memorials have been conducted at golf courses, sailing clubs, gardens and concert halls. I can liaise with the funeral director and the staff at the venue about all aspects of the ceremony.

Music chosen by you

Music has always played an important part of funeral ceremonies, and family members are welcome to choose any kind of music that they consider appropriate.

Where the decision has been made for the cremated remains to be eventually interred at a place of your choice (subject to certain permissions being granted), this can be undertaken by myself in conjunction with the funeral director — a simple, dignified ceremony.

In My Own Words

A funeral is part of the healing process

A funeral service has two aims — to celebrate the life of your loved one, and to be sensitive to your needs at what can be a very sad and difficult time. — Michael Oliver
Frequently Asked Questions

Things people often want to know

How do I start the process of arranging a ceremony?

In most cases, your chosen Funeral Director will pass your details on to me. You're equally welcome to call or email me directly — I'm happy to talk things through with no obligation, at whatever time suits you best.

What's the difference between a celebrant and a religious minister?

An independent celebrant offers complete flexibility — a ceremony can be religious, semi-religious, or entirely non-religious, depending on what feels right for the family. A traditional religious minister will follow the established service of their faith. As an independent celebrant and minister, I'm able to work across all of these — including services with hymns, prayers and readings if that's what brings comfort.

Can the ceremony be held somewhere other than a crematorium?

Yes. Although most ceremonies take place at a Crematorium Chapel, Woodland Burial site or Private Chapel, other locations are absolutely possible as long as permission has been given by the owners. I have conducted ceremonies at golf courses, sailing clubs, gardens and concert halls.

Will I see the eulogy before the day?

Yes — always. You'll have the opportunity to view the eulogy or tribute, along with the order of service, before the day, so we can make sure everything is exactly right. A transcript of the ceremony is also presented to the family afterwards.

What kind of music can we choose?

Any music that feels appropriate to you. Family members are welcome to choose hymns, classical pieces, popular songs — whatever reflects your loved one. I'll liaise with the funeral director and venue staff to make sure everything plays smoothly on the day.

Do you cover my area?

I'm based in Toddington, Bedfordshire, and travel throughout the surrounding counties — including Luton, Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes, Bedford, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. I'm happy to travel up to around 50 miles where travel costs are covered. Please get in touch if you're unsure — there's no harm in asking.

Can you help with the burial of cremated remains?

Yes. Where the decision has been made for cremated remains to be eventually interred at a place of your choice — subject to certain permissions — this can be undertaken by myself in conjunction with the funeral director, as a simple, dignified ceremony.

What does it cost?

Fees depend on the type of ceremony, the location and whether travel beyond the local area is involved. I'm always happy to discuss costs openly at the outset, with no obligation. Please call or email and I'll talk you through everything.

How quickly can a ceremony be arranged?

Timings are usually led by the funeral director and crematorium availability. I'm able to respond quickly and work to whatever timescale you need — please do call as early as possible so we can begin the planning conversation.
